I just got around to reading a bunch of feeds that had been piling up for the past 2 weeks or so, and decided to try something new.
Instead of taking it all in and keeping my thought just to me, I'll share a few of the articles that really got my attention.

I was planning on choosing just one, but after sifting through about 500 items, I managed to choose these 3 (in no particular order):

Sonic 4 - episode one (reviewed) (via ars technica)

I knew this would eventually be released, but being the platforming genre fan I am, and owning sonic 1, 2, 3 and sonic & knuckles (and playing them to the point of exhaustion), the feeling of disapointment for all the terrible, terrible implementations and ideas that sega tried over the years was just overwhelming. The original formula isn't that hard to understand, right ?
Plan for fun, have bright colors and a fast pace, make the levels interesting and with multiple paths/choices for the player to explore. Don't make it too fast or you'll end with sonic rush.

C++ turns 25 (via wired)

I still consider C++ to be a superior language, even though it's lagging in some important aspects. At least we know features aren't being churned out just to sell/promote the next version. Everything fits, everything is thought through.
It is a big and complex language, but when used by competent developers, the results are astonishing.
The interview is not too focused on the language, and has no technical details, so it's a nice and light read.

When it drops (via lifehacker)

It's a clean site that shows what's being released, in several sections (movies, music, dvds, games and books).
Yet another site added to my feeds ;)

Synergy keyboard and mouse sharing

I have been using this for a while to share my workstation keyboard and mouse with my Eee pc.
I have the Eee plugged into the network and hooked to an external display.
With synergy I can use it as if it was a dual screen setup, except the right screen is running kubuntu, while the left is running windows.

I had one minor (not a show stopper, but annoying as hell) problem with synergy.
Sometimes the mouse would get stuck while changing screens.
After some research I found out it was some weird interaction between the synergy server (running on the windows machine) and Outlook.

This page fixed the problem!
I just had to check the "don't take forground window on Windows servers" option.

If you have more than one pc, I highly recommend you look into this little utility.

Axis of Justice, the podcast by Tom Morello and Serj Tankien is back.

Tom Morello (aka The Nightwatchmen) - Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave's Guitar player, and Serj Tankien - System Of a Down's Vocalist give the show a political tone, and all the guests and songs are cherry picked with this in mind.

I'm glad to see (listen?) them back on the show (which was stopped for quite some time).

Dropbox usage

Let me start by stating the obvious: dropbox rules.

For me, dropbox is what I expected from gdrive, the long rumored google online storage service.
I first heard about it from my friend Ricardo (Thanks dude).

They offer 2 Gb free storage (you can buy more space).
The files are under version control (i.e. it can act as a backup system, with online storage).
They have a desktop client that will synchronize a local folder with your dropbox account contents (and the other way around).
There are linux, mac and windows versions of the desktop client. The linux version has support (only) for gnome's file manager:nautilus, but it also runs as a service, so using it in KDE will just work (no GUI, just nicely synchronized files).
There is also (as would be expected) a web-only interface to your dropbox account.

I am proud of the new use I found for dropbox:

My dad is still taking his first steps with the internet. He's pretty confortable with the regular desktop applications. Email clients, not so much.
He keeps asking me to check his email, and get some attachments on his my documents folder.
Teaching him how to use email should be easy. About spam and phishing. Not so much.
I installed dropbox on his pc and now I just drop the files in the web-based dropbox, and he will instant and effortlessly have them available.
Plus, he now also has backups as a bonus ;)

Now that kings of convenience are going to São Miguel, for their only (know, so far) concert in Portugal this year, the radio is bombarding us with their music. Not that I'm complaining, it's great music to be bombarded with.

I find this sad for two reasons:

1) Their music deserves more air-time. This was actually the first time I heard it in the radio here!
2) I won't be able to go to the concert :(

Mistérios Negros

I went on another trekking trip, this time with just a few friends.
This time I went to "Mistérios Negros" which means something like "Black Mysteries".

The tree here were kind of yellow due to the acidity of the soil. And these trees are really resistant (they are actually a japanese tree and were imported to the azores a few years ago)!

Here I am, doing some weird faces for the camera, as usual ;)

Going up, across some relatively dense local vegetation. Mostly endemic plants, like cedars and "rapa" which is the common name for a local species that tends to be the first plant to grow on vulcanic rock.

Here is my neighbour, our guide for this trip, half way up.

This is part of the view from up there, we can see two "black mysteries". They are nothing more than huge bubbles that formed before the lava cooled down, and are actually hollow inside. They are called mysteries because, at the time they formed, the island was already populated, but nobody here knew how to explain them. When asking the most knowledgeable person around at the time (usualy the local priest), they would just reply it was a mystery.

This took us 2 and a half hours, and we were visited by a dog. It was a really strange experience because it was a labrador, just like Vincent from Lost . He looked pretty good, not like a dog that would sleep around there, and went by us running at full speed, and we never saw him again. Strange!
Sadly I didn't manage to take his picture. He was really speeding!

I woke up today at 6 am with an earthquake (4.7 Richter scale).
Worst thing about it is, nobody else woke up, and since today is a very special day, nobody would believe me. But at least now it's been reported by the media.

It's a strange feeling waking up with everything shaking. Although it's not the first time this happens to me, I always get that strange what-the-hell's-going-on-am-I-drunk-and-don't-remember feeling.

Rocha do Chambre

Last week I decided to go trecking. We have a local association called montanheiros that organizes monthly trecking trips in the island (Terceira, for those of you that don't now where I'm writting from), and I was one of the 158 brave souls that accepted to join them.

This month we went to Rocha do Chambre, which is really worth the visit. I drive by it (altough it is not visible from the road) every day on my way to and from work. We saw the geothermal power plant that's being built here, and from the distance it honestly looked like a scene from the TV show Lost...

Spirit of Jazz

Another costume party.
This time I went as Spirit of Jazz (a recurring side charater from the britcom The Mighty Boosh).

But as you can imagine, getting a flaming white top hat is no easy task ... and the white suit is not exactly common either. So I had to do a "blacker" spirit of jazz (Is that even possible ?).

Here's how it turned out:

Next to me is Miss Voodoo. It was not a perfect impersonation, but we managed to (accidentally) scare our fair share of small children during the night.

Oh, and the costumes were a nice conversation starter also ;)

It was fun! Next time I really need to get the white suit and flaming top hat ...

Namespaces as template parameters

It's always of frustrating to bump into (what seems) like a language limitation.
When something you want to express should be simple, but is not.

I wanted to pass namespaces as parameters for templates.
Why ?

I have legacy code that uses namespaces for what they are intended. Distinguishing scope between otherwise clashing identifiers.
I want to write a template that is parameterized by these scopes, but I cannot. Currently only typenames and int like values can be passed as template parameters (at least that I know of).

To work around this I would need to change the namespaces to structs. Not very nice :(

After a quick search, I found proposal n1605 (pdf link!) in open-std dated from 2004. Nice, just what I needed!
But as it turns out, it was not accepted (or was superseded).

I'm hoping it was superseded :(
I'll have to investigate a little further ...

gmail labs features i'm using

Lately google started pumping some nice optional features into gmail in the form of "labs features".

Some of them were already available (kind of) as greasemonkey scripts, but this way things are smoother, since the functionality is instantly available anywhere I log in.

To enable them just click the little green icon on the top of the page.

The ones I'm using, and why I like them:

Pictures in chat: pretty self explanatory
Right side chat: I'm still trying this out, but I like the way it makes better use of my screen real estate ;)
Navbar drag and drop: adds an iGoogle feeling ;)
Forgotten Attachment Detector: because it is just a good idea
Mark as Read Button: I tend to use this a lot.
Google Calendar gadget: very handy
Google Docs gadget: these two make gmail feel a lot like reduced igoogle.
Add any gadget by URL: And this is the punchline, this little thingy allows embedding any gadget (igoogle or anything) in gmail.

I'm currently just using the remember the milk gadget:

I wish they also added these experimental features for google reader ... (a "mark as read until current" would be great!)

Back from vacations

Vacations are over, and now I had to face something that I did not want to think about (no, I'm not talking about work).

Both my hard drives decided to go kaput on me.
At nearly the same time.
One has bad clusters (i.e. I managed to get my data back).
The other seems to have a fried head (clik clik clik clik sounds seems to me like it can't find out where the head is positioned ... so... no data recovery here).

This probably happened due to my asus T3 case size and having both disks there with no fans installed on them.Lesson learned (God, if you're listening, loosing one hard drive would have done the trick)

Oh, and this was after having a third hdd on hold to send to RMA. That one just gave up on itself.
I guess hard drives just don't like me.
So while i'm left with no hard drives, I decided to buy a "fast" usb pen and install my system (Kubuntu) on it.

Here's what I got:
For 39.99€ I got an 8GB pen with a 31Mbps read and 11Mbps write speeds.
Not bad considering there is no bzzzz sound when it's working (and that's how I like it) and if you consider there's no seek time.
It wont compare to an internal hard drive, especially when something is being written.
But it's nice to have a system on a stick :)

I disabled firefox's disk cache (go to about:config and search for cache).
This turned out to be a great way to make it go faster!

A tried installing ramlog, but it didn't seem to be working properly (I tried version 1.1).
I think the idea is great independently if it's a mechanic hard disk or some solid state disk.

I'll see if this pen works nicely on my eeepc 901 (once they start selling it here).

Coffee flavored green tea

Apparently this is the final slap in the face for those who go to a Chinese restaurant turned Japanese.

I vaguely suspect they might have green tea in china.
They just don't serve it in restaurants. At least not Japanese ones.

I have two episodes worth mentioning:

Episode 1 (it starts):
Once I got green tea, and they used the plant's branches instead of the leaves.
Now, I don't know if it was a special way of preparing it. It didn't taste particularly bad, but it wasn't fun having to be constantly avoiding to drink the little branches that were floating on the cup ...

Episode 2 (it ends?)
Today something new happened. Something amazing!
I (and a bunch of friends, Hi guys!) asked for green tea.
The tea is served.
A first sip, and the boundary between theine and caffeine seems thiner than ever.
Wait a minute, this tastes a little like coffee.
No.
I tastes a LOT like coffee.
And not a bit like green tea.
Give or take, this is the conversation that followed:

"Excuse me, is this coffee ?"
"No, it's green tea."
"Really? it tastes a lot like coffee..."
"But it's green tea."
"Hummmmkay...."

At this point the waiter goes aways, asks a colleague something and comes back.

"It's coffee flavored green tea"

Oh, that must make it alright then.

Kanji's, take1

I finally decided to start to learn some Kanji's.
I got a book that simply tries to teach the meaning of the kanji, showing why it's drawn like that and that really helps you to remember it among the hundreds (eventually thousands) you'll learn.

Nowhere you see how its read in japanese. That's strange, but also usefull. Remember kanji's are chinese, and as such, are shared between them.

So, at the moment I can read some kanji's into english/portuguese, but I cannot read them in japanese ... Believe it or not, this makes it a little easier to learn them.

This is the kanji for Sun (or day). The book explains that kanji do not have round shapes, so we should imagine this a little rounded in the corners ... and the line in the middle makes it a smiling sun.
Now that's easy to remember.

And I won't confuse it with:
If you round the outer lines like for the 'sun' kanji, and then bend the tips of the inside lines one towards each other, it is easy to remember that this is the kanji for eye (eyeball).

Not that it's very useful on itself, but it's used to build more complex kanji's...

Wii gots a wii

Thank's to Mr Enes for "forgetting" his precious wii at my place.

I got the chance to try some of the games that were getting some nice reviews, notibly super mario galaxy.

The game is a little childish, and that's how it's supposed to be. After all those first person shooters filled with gore, it's nice to get back to what made me play games in the first place. Vibrant colors, beautiful environments, impressive moves, and most of all ... fun!

The game concept reminds me of a mix of 3 elements.

Good old super mario
Kiki the nanobot
The Little Prince

Kiki already used the micro gravity concept, and is around for some years now (it's free, you should try it).
Super Mario Galaxy makes a great use of this nice idea:

And quite frankly, some of the planets in this game reminded me of the planets I read about in The Little Prince...

Makes me want to buy my own wii ...

This lifehacker post caught my attention ...

I always assumed I needed to use a plugin to take advantage of firefox's sidebar.
No.
Ticking a checkbox in the bookmark properties is all it takes...

Ok...
So what fits nicely there?
Any site optimized to be seen in a mobile device is perfect for this.
I'm using these (just bookmark them and then edit the bookmark's properties and select the 'load this bookmark in the sidebar' box:

Google Calendar (agenda mode), there is also Month and Week modes
Google Reader (iphone version)
Remember the milk (the igoogle gadget)
del.icio.us (stripped html version, edit the link if you want to see your bookmarks. more options explained here).

Try them.
I especially like the google reader version for the iphone.

What I do right after installing kubuntu

Ok, so this was my second time installing kubuntu ( I started with Gutsy and moved on to Hardy).
I decided to fully reinstall, because I wanted a fresh start (I like to mess with the system configuration a lot).

Ok, so the first thing I install is everybody's favorite browser, firefox. This time around I installed firefox 3 beta5 (from the repositories). I am just sad because it looks so good with the native look&feel in windows and in mac, but in linux it falls short and by default just looks ... old. I wish there was a plugin to integrate it with kde (or gnome, for those using it). This would just make sense (tm).

Another application i'm taking for a test drive is mozilla's prism. This is nothing more than a lightweight version of firefox with

I personally like using google reader in a prism but nothing beats remember the milk's igoogle gadget in a prism.
It looks something like this:

Very minimalistic, portable and efficient way of keeping my todo list close by.

At this point I realize gvim isn't installed yet ... my configuration looks like this:
I'm using the oceandeep colorscheme, and I can't live without these plugins: taglist, bufexplorer, alternate buffers (quickly switch between .h and .cpp for example) and recently, project (this one is not easy to get the hang of, but is very usefull).

The next application I install is usually amarok. For those who don't know, it is linux's best (non lightweight) music player. If you haven't already, you should try it. If you want to migrate an old instalation, have a look at one of my previous posts.
If you use amarok, you should take a look at amarokfs (unfurtunatelly it is not in the main ubuntu repositories yet).
I use musicbrainz picard to tag the mp3s I get (I also use the cover plugin, which I strongly recommend)

Pidgin, the multi protocol instant messenger (I personally use AIM, ICQ, MSN and gTalk) comes next.

Subversion, and my favorite frontend, kdesubversion are a must. I have keept my homedir under source control for about a year now and haven't regretted it a bit. Not everything is checked in, the Desktop is kept off, as a place to keep stuff temporarily. I was inspired to do this by this post. I also keep some important system configuration files in there, and trust me, this can really come in handy!

I also use gnucash, so this comes next. It is a great way to know where the hell my money went when my account reaches rock bottom :(

For my picture albums I use digikam, and I always install the kipi-plugins, that allow me to do batch resizing and other fun stuff with my pictures.
Digikam is quickly growing into a respectable application, that rivals paid alternatives ...

As far as games go, nothing beats good old MAME, or in ubuntu's case, sdlmame (the sdl fork that is still actively maintained and kept up to date with the main fork).

Some utilities i've come to depend on are:
Filelight - this is a great way to see where you are spending all of that hard drive space without having to manually look around everywhere. For my "big" partition, it looks something like this (the labels change automatically to reflect what is under your mouse):

On the development front, I usually install:
bjam (boost jam, used by boost-build)
boost-build (a great portable build system)
doxygen (generate documentation based on the source code)
graphviz (used by doxygen for generating graphs)
And some boost c++ libraries I am using...

Wow, that was a lot (and some weirder, less useful stuff was left out...), but anyway, enjoy ;)

I went to Joe Satriani's concert last night.
It was a nice concert. Nice, not great, because the sound equalization was not exactly perfect. I'm no expert, but the sound just seemed a bit too loud and the high frequencies were also too strong ... So some songs that I knew were hard to recognize ... and I listen a lot of satriani!
One song that worked particularly well (in my humble opinion) was Cryin'.

But one thing amazed me was the Bass player in the band. I didn't know him, but halfway through the concert the rest of the band left the stage ... and left him there, soloing.
I thought it was going to be a short solo, or else the public would get impatient ...
I had no idea how wrong I was ...

Migrating Amarok's collection to a fresh install

I, like countless other geeks around the world decided to switch to the new LTS version of Ubuntu (Kubuntu in my case).

So I did, and because I was dying to try Kde4, I chose Kubuntu 8.04 kde4 remix.

My first impression is that Kde4 is still maturing. It is not possible to do everything that we could do with kde3, but I do like the way it is going. It is fully usable, if you are willing to either pull some kde3 packages to do what you need or if you know how to do it from the console.

But my major woe was one I have already experienced when migrating from Gentoo to Kubuntu (Gutsy) a while back. At the time I could not migrate my Amarok collection (sqlite db) and listening habits to my fresh instalation.

Here's what I did.

I backed up my ~/.kde/ folder, so I had all of amarok's configurations.
I had all of my music on a safe partition, ready for a newly installed amarok to take it to town.

So, after installing Kubuntu and Amarok in it, I copied

amarokrc into ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc
amarok into ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok

And then, when I launch amarok up, my collection was ... empty :(

After a while, I noticed what I was missing (and its solution):

I opened ~/.kde/share/apps/amarokrc in my trusty old friend: vi, and scrolled to the [Collection Folders] section. It looked alright, except I did not understand what the first number was there for. (it looked something like: 11=./mnt/mydisk/music/).
After some googling around, I found out that 11 was a volume identifier, and that I could just replace it with -1 to indicate all paths are relative to /. After doing that and restarting amarok, everything was just working (tm).

Day one, it starts!
Right, sorted!

Ok lads, I'm writing this from Seinajöki, Finland!
It was a darn big trip. Waking up at 5AM to catch the plane on time, was a real downer. I hate getting up early.
Wining apart, the trip was great. Full of small details. Stuff like ... something to see while on the plane other than water ... water ... water. There were a bunch of different stuff on the plane. The had cameras on the plane's nose so we could see the track while we took off. Why didn't we think of that? Also ... everybody on the plane spoke French! Well ... the flight is going through Paris.
I landed on Charles de Gaulle, and still managed to see the Eiffel tower covered in mist on the distance.
There I checked if I had to carry my luggage to the other plain or if it was taken there by the airport staff (just making sure ;) ). Since my French is terrible (térrible!) I tried to talk in English the whole time. It was a great surprise to see a nice girl working for Air France reply in perfect Portuguese as soon as she saw my ID. So about the luggage ... they would take care of everything.
As I waited on the gate to the plain to Helsinki, I noticed the difference in the passengers. Most of them were tall and blonde (I assume they were Finns), and I also found a lot of asians there. I found out later that there are a lot of flights to all of Asia from Helsinki. Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Seoul, you name it. I guess they take pass close to the Arctic Circle. Now that also looks like a great trip ;)
Ok, on the second plain they spoke Finn. My Finn skills are very close to my French... (none)
The first thing that caught my attention while the plain was landing was the pine trees covered in white. Its a really nice view.
When I got to Helsinki I had the pleasant surprise of not having my luggage. Apparently it was stuck in Paris (I knew I should have spoken in French!). Well, it should arrive with the next flight. At least they'll carry it for me all the way to Seinajöki (or so I hope).
So now to go to Tikkurila station to get the train to Seinajöki. The bus was fast, so now I had to wait for about one hour until the Pendolino 59 train got there. While I was waiting I noticed that the only Finn word I knew was very used by youngsters to start and end sentences. If you're wondering, its "vittu" ...

Oh and by the way, it wasn't that cold... I only felt cold in my feet (I need to use an extra pair of socks on top of this one).

Two ways to speed up Kubuntu

There are two very interesting projects that help speed up (program) load times in linux.
I am trying them in Kubuntu, with good results. Both are easily installable (just install their package and you're good to go).

1 - Prelink
Especially useful for kde.
This project aims to reduce some of the work that is done when loading executables that depend heavily on shared libraries. In these cases most of the loading time is spent replacing (in memory) the addresses of each shared symbol used in the executable with the correct address of that symbol in the shared libraries.
Prelink scans your system and patches all your executable files so that this step is no longer required at load time (I believe some symbols are still resolved only at load time) . Whenever a shared library is updated, this process needs to be repeated (this is automatically added to a cron task, so you don't normally need to worry about it).

2 - Preload
Especially interesting if you system has some memory to spare.
Preload is a daemon that monitors the system usage and attempts to preload to memory the programs that will most probably be used next. The memory is still seen as available by the system, the only difference is that the program is already loaded (so there is no need to pull it from the hard drive when it is executed).

These are not enabled by default on Kubuntu, probably because of their experimental nature. I have been using prelink for about a month now, with no problem whatsoever. I have just installed preload yesterday, so I am still waiting for it to adapt to my use patterns.

How I got my data back

It was nothing special, now that I look back, knowing it worked. At the time, not being sure ... it sure felt like something ;)
Anyway, I just want to tell you how I got my data back.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, my power supply gave up on me, and took my 500 GB barracuda seagate drive along with it.
It was my main drive ... auchy!

The disks behaviour was the following (which was all the information I had on the problem):

The disk would not spin up. Nothing, not a sound, no vibration whatsoever, nothing. It was completely dead. No matter if it had power or not, nothing happened. I tried with an old ATX power supply I had (from the Pentium 3 days ...), and the result was the same.
If the disk was plugged in, the rest of the pc would not get any power. It was like the disk was short-circuiting, and the power supply was just giving up on everything.

I had no idea what was wrong with the disk now, aside from knowing something was obviously fried. The question was what ?
So now my options were:
a) The internal engine was fried.
b) The PCB was fried.

If the engine was fried the only way to get back my data would be to take the disk platters of, and install them on a different disk.
This solution was definitely not in my league. I couldn't do it myself because I would need a clean environment (I assume the tinniest bit of dust on a platter can take away a lot of data). Or I could send my disk to one of those companies that specialize in doing this kind of stuff. Apart from not being particularly fond of having my disk dessicated by someone I don't know, the costs were prohibitively high for me.

At this point I prayed it was just the PCB.
So I decided to buy a new disk, exactly the same model AND firmware from the same store I bought the first one. Since it was less than a year old, I managed to get one, that matched everything but the serial number (duh). Sweet!

I also bought a set of TORX keys to remove the disks PCB:

Now, when removing the PCB from the old disk I was expecting some kind of connector I would need to unplug with surgical precision, It would surely be small and fragile.
For those of you that know "The Fast Show" (name "Brilliant" in the U.S.), I was feeling kind of like Unluky Alf: Knowing me luck, i'll probably break both.
Imagine my surprise when I unscrew the last screw and the PCB just slips off.
"Oooh, bogger!"
Still, nothing was broken, and I found out that the connection is similar to that of a SIM card on a cellphone, and is held in place by the screws.
Great! I unscrewed the PCB from the new drive (marked the old one with a felt tip pen, just so I wouldn't mix them up) and prepared to see what would happen.

I have the old disk, with new PCB screwed in plugged, press the power button and hold my breath.
It spun up!!!
So the engine was ok!
Now I just had to worry about if the disk would be recognized by the BIOS, or if It still was a useless piece of hardware.

Ok, it was recognized! All is in good shape!
Next worries: hope the calibration data on the new PCB is similar enough to my old disk. Hope the damaged clusters on the disk are also similar. When a disk is built, it is impossible to have it completely error free, so the defective ones are marked at the factory. Kind of having an LCD with dead pixels that don't bother you (unless you try something like this ...).

I decided to try and launch the OS from it (it was my main disk, remember).
So here we go.
The OS is Kubuntu, and the OS was installed in a partition with ReiserFS. All of the rest was on a huge Ext3 partition.

A few errors, here, but still, Kubuntu managed to start up OK, and I was free to copy any file I wanted. I was lucky enough and there were no corrupted files (at least among the ones I wanted to salvage).

So this was I got my data back.
Conclusion: Swapping a dead disks PCB is not as crazy as it might seem!
Also: don't throw you old PCBs away, they might come in handy later ;) (some people sell them).

Crash and Burn

It's been a while since I've last posted ... But who cares!
Down to business.

When I got back from my Christmas holidays, after all was settled, I decided to check my (I would imagine) huge unread count of both emails and google reader items.
As I pressed the power button, this is what I heard:

At least that was what it sounded like.

It was (kind of) funny, because this happened in a split second, but I still managed to think: "Crap, I should really turn this off, before everything gets fried".
Funnier still, I thought this really fast, but my body just didn't react fast enough. when my finger got to the power button, everything was already off... And there was a funny smell in the air...
No, it was not what you are thinking, I smelled something burned. Hopping it was just the fuse of the power supply, I decided it was time to sleep the back luck off.
The next day, I tried to see what was wrong with it. No reaction whatsoever, no matter what I did. Everything pointed to the burned power supply fuse ...
I cursed my luck and considered what to do next.

I was planning to buy a shuttle xpc for quite sometime now. I didn't up to now because:
1) I didn't really need one, I had a perfectly good (okay, it was butt ugly) case and a nice power supply (note the past tense).
2) In Portugal their supplier sucks (they seem to take pleasure in not selling them barebone).

Well, point 1 was half way taken care of, and with Christmas just behind my back (I normally get some cash to spend on something I want), I decided It was time to go small form factor ;)
Point 2 was cleared when I finally found a store that sold barebone xpcs here!

I even have a friend of mine that works there. Perfect.
I was suprised to hear him say that the xpcs tend to have some issues with their (small) power supplies, and that finding replacements can be hard around here. So that's why I kept seeing lots of them in ebay!

So I asked him for advice, though about it for a while, and decided I would buy an Asus T3 (the T stands for terminator :( )

It is a small barebone system from Asus, and they somehow manage to cram inside that puny case a bunch of normal sized material, including a standard ATX power supply.
Seen from the side, the case is as big as an A4 dossier and from the front it is just wide enough to hold an optical drive)

So here I go for a nice upgrade.
I ended up ordering the Asus T3, a kit of 2GB DDR2 OCZ platinum rev2, and a Quad core.
Hehehehehe :D

After a few days of wainting, I got these:

Uuuh, it's small, and looks nice ;)

Space inside the case is really scarce. It uses a normal ATX power supply (at least in terms of size), it can handle two hard drives, an optical drive a pci-express and a normal pci card.

And this is how we have access to the guts of the case. It has a hinge at the bottom. Looks like a smart move ;)

I installed the cooler that came with the CPU box I bought. It fits perfectly.
In the bottom left, you can see the two disks.

At this point I noticed a design flaw in the T3. Either I have some weird disks, or Asus didn't quite calculate the space to hold them. I cannot screw them both in and connect the sata cables (there just is no room).

Fortunately they fit if I just don't screw them in. Oh, and they are held securely by the case, nowhere to move. Lucky me ;)

When I plugged everything in, and pressed the power button nothing happened...

A bad luck streak ? After some investigating, I found out my 500 GB seagate disk was somehow sucking the powersupply dry of power (a.k.a. short circuiting). So nothing worked.
Great.
My main disk ... screwed.
At this point I started thinking when was the last time I backed up (and I do backup)...
Murphy's law kicked in, and yes, the backup was a lot older than I like it to be ...

But I didn't give up...
I'll tell you how I got my disk back to life in my next post (the size of this one is already above average for me).

This application sure has a silly name... And I just took it for a quick test drive.

I was keeping Umbrello on my TODO list for quite a while, and today I decided to just try and see how it would behave with some of my source files.

Professionaly I have used Rational Rose (unfortunately only a version dating back from 2000/2001), Together Architect and Together for Eclipse (this last one just for a few days).

But from what I've seen, these tools never quite work like we intended them to. There is just no replacement for nice hand-written code. That is, until you find yourself needing to refactor something or to just review your overall design some time down the road.
Of course, if you are not experimenting with something and need to design the whole system before actually implementing anything, these tools become a must-have.

From using those tools, I've got the idea that they don't always let me do what I want. If I raise the bar just a little bit and start using "modern" C++ (using policy-based-design or mixins for example), things would just stop working.

Let me tell you, Umbrello's C++ importer did a great job at importing a nice piece of code I'm working with.
I chose this particular piece of code because it is not quite straightforward and uses the techniques mentioned above.
I was really surprised when Umbrello started asking me questions about ambiguous portions of the code (is this symbol a namespace or a class?). And in the end it had all of the classes available for me to use in the diagrams.
Furthermore, it didn't generate a useless "default" diagram with all the classes just thrown in (like most other CASE tools I've used so far do).

About the exporter ... It didn't really impress me...
Maybe I'm just too picky when I look at code, but I think I just like to see pretty code and really hate generated code.

But I'm sure I'm going to look into this, tweak the options, see if there are more generators available, etc ..., with some more time ;)

Generally, I'm impressed!

Quite frankly, he reminded me of some of my former teachers, which I reckon is a good sign, both to me and my former teachers.
